In celebration of Sam's birthday, we're hosting another comment fic meme!

THE RULES

→ Leave a comment here with your prompt. Because it's Sam's birthday, I'm going to say that any Sam-centric prompts are okay, even if there's not much hurt/comfort in them.
→ In your prompt, please state your desired characters or pairings. All genres/pairings welcome, but no real-person prompts.

Example A: “Sam, Dean, gen, set in season 2. Sam has a vision and passes out. Cue caring!Dean and limp!Sam.”

Either way, Sam's not healing, just getting worst. All ends shmoopily after h/c hi-jinks ensue.

dime_for_12 wrote Sam suffers an injury that won't be fatal but that will be intensely painful for some time and/or take a long time to heal enough to get back in the hunt if it'll heal at all. Frustration, h/c, and finally he gives up and asks Dean to kill him, because he knows perfectly well he'll bounce back from that much faster.

In fact, I think I love you. ;-) This is exactly what I was looking for! Love that you chose pertussis. Ya know, I just recently got a bunch of immunizations for a trip and found out there's been a quiet pertussis outbreak here in Utah among adults. I sure didn't know we're supposed to re-up our boosters every 10 years. (I'm sure John's safe, though, as tetnus is also in the booster and he's bound to get more'n his fair share of those shots given his job.)

But, I digress. I wanted to say how much I loved that it could be mistaken and dismissed, and that Dean was the only one with Sammy enough to notice and realize that it was something more severe. Loved that he insisted they all stand there and listen to Sam and the last line was great. Very good backstory for Dean's caring for Sammy's health in the future. :-D

I based a lot of this after my own experience getting Pertussis when I was 17. Specifically, how neither my parents nor my doctor believed me when I said "this is whooping cough". Even though there was a whooping cough epidemic going through my school. Until, you know, the test came back the next day and I was confirmed as positive. It's a tricky disease like that... Yeah, it's surprising how many people think they're still immune to things they last had shots for years ago (like smallpox or anything in the DTaP vaccine).

I'm glad you liked it! :) My microbiology classes often make me want to write h/c fics about all the crazy disease we talk about, but I have a feeling that'd seem... kinda weird. And crazy.

Ahhhh, but the past few episodes have given you an absolutely perfect opportunity! After all, Pestilence is a crafty figure, and he knew those Winchester boys were out there. ;-)

I must say, I was freaking out when Pestilence was talking. Japanese encephalitis? Dengue fever? Syphilis? Be still, my beating heart! Besides, you hear such weird things in micro classes... like Pseudomonas, and how people with severe infections can actually glow in the dark. That's just awesome!

Good to know someone else might be interested in fic about horrible diseases. ;) :)

I've never heard of that. That would be awesome. "Well, I think we have the correct diagnosis, but just to be sure, let's turn off the lights."

It also makes people smell sort of like grape bubblegum, so I'm thinking it'd be a very easy diagnosis. And it's mostly a problem with severe burns, so, that's perfect for some h/c fic!

That is the weirdest thing. Grape bubblegum smell and glow in the dark sounds like a toy, not an illness.

And being related to burns? As in the fire in the pilot (either one)? Or the fire in 1x21? Or a missing scene fic fire? I'd love to read any of 'em!

Stop that, lol. I need to finish editing my Big Bang fic before I can even think about writing anything else. Once that ordeal is over, I might have to write this.

And then this fall I'm screwed, because I'm taking a "Bioterrorism and Emerging Infectious Disease" class and I'm pretty sure that every lecture will seem like a fic prompt.
