TRIPLE PLAY at OhSam!

Let’s try something a little different for September at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam! We’re calling it the Triple Play Challenge and here’s the deal …

BOOST THE SIGNAL

Step One: Write a three-part prompt.
1.) Pick a setting
2.) Pick an additional character or characters (Sam is assumed, naturally.)
3.) Pick an H/C scenario, with Sam as the focus. Other characters can share the misery, but Sam should get the brunt of it. That's how we roll. :D

You can make as many prompts as your little heart desires, one set per comment, but it would probably work best if kept simple. For instance: 1.) the Impala, 2.) Dean and Garth, 3.) an infected hangnail, or 1.) autumn 2.) Jessica Moore 3.) allergies.

Step Two: Make visual art! Create a drawing, painting, photomanip, or video based around an offered prompt set. All three points must be addressed. The art can be doodled or extravagantly detailed, artist’s choice. And, of course, Sam should be the primary focus of the H/C. Please reply with your art under the prompt you chose, and either put the art beneath a cut or supply a link to it, with appropriate header and warnings! (See sidebar left.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

Step Three: Authors are invited to write roughly 300 words for the art. (No one’s going to count so if you run a little under, no big deal. And if you’re inspired to write more? Awesome! Go for it.) Again, please reply with your fic under the art you chose, with appropriate header and warnings. (See sidebar left.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

If more than one author or artist wants to work with the same prompt, have at it! Steps Two and Three can be inverted, however the end game is to complete all three steps, the Triple Play. But hey, follow where the muse leads you. Most of all, have fun … at Sam’s expense. ;)

The usual courtesies apply:
→ If you notice that your fic is not on the master list after a decent amount of time (say, three days), please poke me in a PM. I might have missed it.
→ Anon posting enabled.
→ NO SPOILERS FOR UNAIRED EPISODES.
→ Play nice - no flaming and no character bashing, period. Any comments that break this rule will be deleted without warning.
→ Feedback is catnip for writers. Leave some author-love!
→ No spam comments.
→ Contact one of the mods if you have a question.
→ Spread the Sam love - pimp this meme!

1. A church
2. A nun or priest
3. Psychic powers and accompanying anguish (headache, nosebleed, dealer's choice, really)

On occasion, Sam would provide a lame excuse involving a walk, or beers, or other supplies. He would go to whatever local chapel that was open to pray to a God he still held out a small hope for. They never talked about it. Dean ignored it happened and merely grunted if Sam forgot to actually get the beer that was the cover.

It was a rainy Saturday evening and the even staccato of the rain on the roof echoed through the peaceful chapel. Sam sat on a bench, head bowed and searched for the words to say. He came up with a few, mostly for Dean, a few for the world, none for himself. The words stopped when another supplicant sat beside him. He knew before he opened his eyes and met those of solid black. Startled, Sam backed up down the pew.

“A junkie, a demon, and a priest meet at a church,” the man said in a sing-song voice. He inclined his head to the priest who was saying his own prayers. They were now the only ones in the chapel.

“What do you want?” Sam hissed.

“Father Jonah would make a great sacrifice for Lucifer, don’t you think Sammo? Fitting scenery too.”

Without further thought, Sam rose and extended his hand. He felt the power of Ruby’s blood begin to surge but also felt the strain of it as he never had. He squeezed his eyes and pulled further into that dark power. He knew what it was. The sanctity and holiness of the church was fighting against the dark power Sam was tapping. “It’s for a good cause!” He screamed in his head to whatever Holy Power was listening at the moment. He was trying to save the life of the possessed man and that of the Priest. Someone had to listen to reason. He clenched his jaw and reached further into his own power to pull the demon out and send it back to hell. He felt the blood start as a trickle out of his nose and began to flow more easily.

Still the demon resisted as Sam’s power was hampered by the Power of Holy Ground. He heard the demon laugh. “Sam. That’s the beauty of a Church. She does not tolerate even your evil.”

“I’m not evil,” Sam declared through the clenched draw.

“You keep believing the lies. Eventually, Lucifer will tire of this game of yours and claim you”.

He balled his fingers in another attempt to draw further and further into his demon blood powered psyche. As they uncurled, he finally could feel the demon’s hold begin to relinquish. He continued to pull and pull until black smoke began to emerge from the man and puddle at his feet. All Sam needed was just one more push. He found the push and sent the demon back to Lucifer in Hell.

Sam immediately stumbled back, aware of the excruciating pain that felt as though his head was being ripped apart. His knees gave out and he had no means to prevent his fall to the floor. He clutched at this head in a vain attempt to ebb the pain. Instead, it seemed to increase and nausea began to consume him. Not in the church, he thought… or prayed.

Suddenly he was aware of someone kneeling beside him and making a valiant effort to keep him at least sitting upright. A cloth was pressed to his nose from which blood still flowed and his hand moved to hold it in place. “What else can I do, Son?” He heard the kindly voice ask.

He couldn’t respond. He could only groan and hold the hell of his other palm to his forehead.

“Any other time I would suggest an ambulance and hospital but that would not help.”

Sam shook his head. He hoped it was enough for the priest to understand he concurred, no hospitals.

“It’s OK. We’ll just sit here.”

Sam heard a woman’s voice say, “Here you are, Father,” before something was laid down beside him. He then heard the bustling of clothing walking a way as a cool wet cloth was placed on his forehead.

“Can you tell me your name?”

It was a struggle but he said, “Sam.”

“Hello Sam. I’m Father Jonah. Does this happen often?”

“Not as bad,” he managed. The cloth was removed and he heard dripping water before it returned with renewed coolness. It seemed to help some.

It wasn’t as if he forgot but it was now breaking through the pain. “The man... he was beside me…” he stuttered and made a feeble attempt to untangle his limbs to stand. Father Jonah put a restraining hand on his shoulder. He opened his eyes briefly and immediately wished he hadn’t as more pain seared through them directly into his head. “Dammit” he swore before remembering where he was. He gasped.

“It is Ok Sam,” Father Jonah said kindly as he reapplied the cool wet cloth and pushed Sam’s hand back to his nose. “If you can, squeeze your nose. We should really get that stopped or we will have to get you to a hospital.”

Sam acknowledged with a weak nod and did what he could to staunch the nose bleed.

“The man is fine, Sam. No worse for the wear. Sister Florence is praying with him. It was brief. He will not remember.”

Despite the pain, Sam’s eyes flew open.

“One does not become a priest without believing in demons, son. Or those who fight against them. Just be careful not to stray too far. The world needs good men like you.”

It always surprised him when outsiders knew of their work. It was more surprising that Father Jonah referred to him as a “good man”. Most of the time, he couldn’t tell the difference anymore and feared in the end he would lose. He felt the weight of it and hung his head. After a few moments, Father Jonas laid a hand on the back of his head and began speaking softly in Latin, a blessing, Sam realized. Tears mingled with the blood from his nose.

A cool cloth was applied to the back of his neck after the Amen. “Is there anyone I can call for you, Sam?”

Sam cleared his throat. “My brother. Dean. The number’s in my phone.” He fumbled into a pocket to retrieve his phone that he handed to Father Jonah.

“I’ll wait with you until Dean comes, Sam. Maybe we’ll find some peace in the meantime.”

yaaay thank you!!! I Am so glad you enjoyed it! Poor Sammy. The good Father knew there was good in him even if sometimes Sam didn't see it in himself. The struggle of Sam doing good but using evil to do it.

(it may eventually need a sequel with Dean and Father Jonah!)

That was awesome!
Great OC, too.

Thank you!! :D
Father Jonah is a nice guy isn't he?

Oh, I loved this so much. It's so soft and sad and perfectly in character. I loved the idea of Sam praying for Dean but not for himself, and I loved that the priest could see the good in him even though he couldn't see it himself. Perfect, every word <3

[identity profile] calypsobard.livejournal.com 2013-09-08 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. So sad :(
Thank you for the comment!
I'm sure Sam also knows Dean won't pray for himself so someone has to do it.

This is brilliant, i do love it when the brothers find someone who they help and they 'understand' the Supernatural
thanks for sharing

I do too. They may not understand everything but I figure Priests know there's always a battle between good and evil, heaven and hell.. they wouldn't be needed other wise! I'm glad you enjoyed :D

I really like the OCs and how you worked the contrasting "powers" into this.

[identity profile] calypsobard.livejournal.com 2013-09-10 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I figured there would be some kickback of the sanctity of the church against the demon blood. I' glad it came our right :D
