TRIPLE PLAY at OhSam!

Let’s try something a little different for September at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam! We’re calling it the Triple Play Challenge and here’s the deal …

BOOST THE SIGNAL

Step One: Write a three-part prompt.
1.) Pick a setting
2.) Pick an additional character or characters (Sam is assumed, naturally.)
3.) Pick an H/C scenario, with Sam as the focus. Other characters can share the misery, but Sam should get the brunt of it. That's how we roll. :D

You can make as many prompts as your little heart desires, one set per comment, but it would probably work best if kept simple. For instance: 1.) the Impala, 2.) Dean and Garth, 3.) an infected hangnail, or 1.) autumn 2.) Jessica Moore 3.) allergies.

Step Two: Make visual art! Create a drawing, painting, photomanip, or video based around an offered prompt set. All three points must be addressed. The art can be doodled or extravagantly detailed, artist’s choice. And, of course, Sam should be the primary focus of the H/C. Please reply with your art under the prompt you chose, and either put the art beneath a cut or supply a link to it, with appropriate header and warnings! (See sidebar left.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

Step Three: Authors are invited to write roughly 300 words for the art. (No one’s going to count so if you run a little under, no big deal. And if you’re inspired to write more? Awesome! Go for it.) Again, please reply with your fic under the art you chose, with appropriate header and warnings. (See sidebar left.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

If more than one author or artist wants to work with the same prompt, have at it! Steps Two and Three can be inverted, however the end game is to complete all three steps, the Triple Play. But hey, follow where the muse leads you. Most of all, have fun … at Sam’s expense. ;)

The usual courtesies apply:
→ If you notice that your fic is not on the master list after a decent amount of time (say, three days), please poke me in a PM. I might have missed it.
→ Anon posting enabled.
→ NO SPOILERS FOR UNAIRED EPISODES.
→ Play nice - no flaming and no character bashing, period. Any comments that break this rule will be deleted without warning.
→ Feedback is catnip for writers. Leave some author-love!

FILLED: bruises prove it's real, 1/2
Five times Jess doesn't ask Sam about his injuries, and one time she does.

1.

She notices him for the first time in their Latin class - hard not to. That shy smile makes her stomach flutter, dimples and shaggy hair, and Christ, the way the words roll off of his tongue...

Tall, mysterious, handsome - all of the qualities her mother warned her about in a man.

When he rolls up his sleeve one morning, there's a bandage along his right forearm, and Jess leans forward in her seat to get a better look. The gauze wraps all the way around, covering the skin halfway between wrist and elbow, and she frowns, because an injury like that must be painful, but Sam glances back and smiles, tapping his pen against his notebook like it's normal, nothing to worry about, just any other day.

"Jesus, Winchester, you get in another fight with a pair of scissors?"

Sam rolls his eyes, lobbing his pen at the back of Brady's head. Brady ducks and laughs, then turns towards her and wiggles his eyebrows. Jess arches an eyebrow, but her heart races.

Brady tilts his head towards Sam and grins.

2.

Sam cancels their fourth date; he tells her he's sick, refusing her offer to check up on him with an offhanded, "I don't want you to catch my germs." She bites her lip, wonders if he's lying, then tells herself she's being paranoid - he does sound off on the phone, voice weary and strangely pained.

When she sees him the next morning across the quad, he looks like death warmed over, pale under the multiple layers he insists on wearing even in the California heat, breathing labored. His left arm is tucked across his ribs, like he's protecting himself.

Jess speed-walks the rest of the way towards him, resting a hand on his trembling shoulder to help him stand.

"Sam, you should be in bed," she admonishes softly, "You're sick."

Sam shrugs her off and shakes his head. "'M fine," he says, but he sways as he tries to take a step forward.

"You can barely stand," she scoffs, slipping her hand gently around his wrist. "Becky's gone for the weekend. Stay with me." Let me take care of you, she wants to say, but she gets the feeling that Sam Winchester always stands on his own two feet. Accepting unspoken help and help freely given - help that could possibly be misconstrued as pity - are two very different things.

Stubborn ass.

Sam bites his lip, staring down at his feet. Eventually, he sags in her grip. "Okay," he whispers, closing his eyes. "Okay."

Jess slides her arm around his waist, under his outer shirt, stilling at the crunch and bunching of bandages under her palm around his ribcage. This isn't just a normal illness, he's hurt. She purses her lips, glancing up at Sam's face, debating on asking him about it - why he's standing in the middle of the quad and not somewhere sensible, like a doctor's office, or a hospital, being treated.

Then, Sam winces, and Jess wraps her other arm around him, slowly guiding him towards the dorm.

Tomorrow, she vows. I'll ask him tomorrow.

She never does.

3.

Sam always sleeps with his back to her, hands under his head, legs slightly curled - as if warding a blow he expects to strike any time, even in the middle of sleep. Jess doesn't begrudge him this, often curls up behind him, one leg between his, buries her head in his shoulder with an arm around his waist, though she does wish he would hold her once in a while.

She watches his back rise and fall, a slight hitch in his breathing telling her he's still awake. The light from the streetlamp just outside of her dorm room window curls around the bed, and she frowns as she catches sight of a scratch on his shoulder she didn't notice before, a long, thin line extending over his shoulder and across half-way to his spine. The scratch runs almost perpendicular to a pink scar on his shoulder blade.

Jess gently traces the scratch with a fingertip, questions stuck on the tip of her tongue. She leans over and traces the scar with her lips, feeling the raised line against her mouth.

Sam groans and turns over, flipping her on to her back with his hands on her hips, and she quickly forgets to ask.
