Post 6.05 Sam!explanation bunny
I don't know about you, but although 6.05 is not going on my favorites list I did get a potential explanation of what's going on with Sam.
I don't think this is where the season is going, but I thought I'd throw it out here 'cause I'd love to see what y'all will do with it.
Lucifer's cage... all of hell, in fact... was never meant to hold living flesh. Sam has been split by the box. His living body, his knowledge, his determined hunter self fell through the cage and came back to Earth. His emotional self, his compassion, empathy, fear, passion, all the missing pieces of Sam are still in the cage, at the mercy of Lucifer.
Sam has a key to the cage that Lucifer doesn't have, though: An ethereal, gossomer thread connecting him back to his body. He can't pull himself out, though. There's nothing but the thin line to pull against and he's just not strong enough. He needs someone outside the cage to yank him free.
So anyone wanna write it?

Ya know, I just had an expansion on this emotional parts of Sam in hell idea. What if Sam's paying for sex not because he doesn't want commitment or emotion, but because he has to.
I don't know if you've ever watched Dexter, but in early season 1 (maybe even the 1st ep) he says that the risk of trying to have a relationship with a woman is that he believes that while having sex, she can look into his eyes and see the monster he really is. Maybe unemotional, detatched!Sam is freaking out women he tries to pick up, so he just finds it easier to pay.
