Hand wave the issue with The Darkness running over the Impala. We all know for there to be a season, the boys have to get through that somehow.

The question I'm interested in answering is what happens when Sam realizes he knows where Death was going to send Dean. A place away from Earth? A place where Dean would be alive forever and unable to use the mark to hurt himself or others? A place where someone else who'd carried the mark is still steaming over Sam's escape?

Do you think that Death was going to bring Dean to hell = the cage to be exact with Lucifer? That would not have been pleasant either. What I was curious about was the splitting the mark - between two individuals in order to make it more manageable - what about Dean splitting it with Sam? The two of them would have been immortal and unstoppable. They would have been able to handle things and the darkness would not have been released. Could the way to deal with the darkness is God coming back and offering the boys to be the keys?

That's exactly what I think. Dean and Sam both have gotten very bad at asking questions about consequences. Death was being very vague with them, and I think it's because if they had the details of where Dean was going, it wouldn't be acceptable. They just act without thinking too often these days.

Since Cain passed on the mark without losing it, then Lucifer did the same. I'm sure he's cured of it now, or the Darkness wouldn't have risen, but he might be a potential solution for someone to give the mark to. If that's a thing that can be done to solve the Darkness...and if they hadn't killed Death.

I kind of got the impression that it works like... whoever is the current bearer of the Mark is the lock/key - but the Mark never TRULY leaves anyone, so Lucifer and Cain both would have still felt the effects even after they no longer had it - like an old war injury that still aches, or a scar, maybe. They still could wield the Blade, still WANTED to, still were pulled toward the kill - but the one linked to the Darkness and holding it back was Dean. If that makes sense.

I disagree. Cain was "in remission" as it were for a very long time, but when he went on his killing spree, he said something about not being able to resist it anymore once he got back into killing again.

And Death said he could remove the mark. Even if Lucifer couldn't remove it himself, he did have Death bound after raising him during the apocalypse and could've gotten him to remove it. With Cain also having the mark, there'd be no argument about keeping out the darkness.

Death did say two contradictory things about the character of the darkness, though. He said it was amoral (not immoral) so not necessarily good or evil, but he also said the mark had a corrupting influence on the bearers. I'm interested to see what ghe writers do with it.

When Death started talking about this ancient pre-God thing, I really began to wonder. Will missyjack finally get her wish and we'll get Chtlulu-style tentacle action in Supernatural in season 11?

Right, which is what I was referring to when I said the effects of the Mark never truly leave anyone - that they would still have the desire for the Blade and for the kill even after it'd been passed on. :P

And why would Lucifer have WANTED it removed? Lucifer was not like Dean, or even Cain, really - he wasn't tormented over the morality of his choices. He REVELED in meting out death and destruction.

So I guess I'm not really seeing the point on which we're disagreeing? :P

Hmm. I thought Death said "immoral" but I may have heard wrong. They sound so similar and "immoral" makes more sense with the rest of his description of the Darkness.

I'm very, very intrigued to see where all this is headed. :)

I read a take on Lucifer, with the Mark. Perhaps the Mark is what drove Lucifer to the Pride goeth before the fall, so to speak. I like the idea that there is a tangible reason that Lucifer, the Morningstar, God's most precious angel, would just become so destructive and hateful. (i am Catholic, so when show is in all these arcs it gets me going into what I was raised on. Scarily, I can actually identify with some of the reasoning we get on show more than I've gotten in the Bible. Gah...sacreligious girl who is headed Lucifer's way lol) Just a thought.

I don't really see how the first statement contradicts my take on it? It's possible I'm missing something. :P I did say that the effects of the Mark seem to linger with those who have borne it before (Cain and Lucifer).

And why would Lucifer have WANTED it removed? He LOVED death and destruction and killed with enough frequency that the Mark wouldn't have been an issue for him.

I thought Death said the Darkness was "immoral", but I very well might have heard it wrong. :P

I like the idea of splitting the mark since it was both a key and a lock. They could've done a "I am the Keymaster", "I am the Gatekeeper" thing. *sigh* Lost opportunities.
