Absolutely terrible things happen on Sam's birthday. After years of this, it's hard for him to not take it personally. He starts to wonder if it's more than that... if the bad things that happen are happening because it's his birthday, that it's all completely his fault for being born. And he develops not only anxiety but maybe a full-blown phobia about his birthday (an extreme, Sam-specific and very understandable version of fragapane phobia?). But what do you do when you absolutely cannot avoid the thing you're scared of? That date on the calendar's coming, whether he wants it to or not. And something terrible is going to happen again...
