I don’t believe for one minute that Sam simply left Dean hanging, not without being coerced or promised some kind of help if he dropped hunting and laid low.
There’s a reason Sam didn’t try to find a way to get Dean out of Purgatory and since we won’t know what it is for a while, I’m just making up my own for the meantime.
