ohsam | OhSam Triple Play 2016!

It's November 2, an auspicious (if ominous) day for our darling Sam, so to herald his introduction to The Red Stuff, let's revisit an annual tradition. Welcome to the OhSam Triple Play 2016! This year, we're offering a focus on a reoccurring theme in Sam's life: blood.

"Blood" could be interpreted in many ways. Family don't end with blood. The demon blood addiction. Injury. Familial woes. Blood magicks. Simply the color red. If it can be related to blood, even vaguely? IT'S ON POINT.

BOOST THE SIGNAL

And here's how we play!

Step One (mandatory): Write a three-part prompt.
1.) Pick a setting
2.) Pick an additional character or characters (Sam is assumed, naturally.)
3.) Pick an H/C scenario, with Sam as the focus. Other characters can share the misery, but Sam should get the brunt of it. That's how we roll. :D

You can make as many prompts as your little heart desires, one set per comment, but it would probably work best if kept simple. For instance: 1.) West Virginia 2.) Dean 3.) knives, or 1.) Bobby's Panic Room 2.) Mary 3.) demon blood withdrawal.

Step Two (optional): Fill a prompt!
Participants can choose to make visual art: create a drawing, painting, photomanip, or video based around an offered prompt set. All three points must be addressed. The art can be doodled or extravagantly detailed, artist’s choice. And, of course, Sam should be the primary focus of the h/c. Please reply with your art under the prompt you choose, and either put the art beneath a cut or supply a link to it, with appropriate header and warnings! (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

Participants could also choose to write a ficlet, again with Sam as the primary victim of our dastardly h/c scenarios. (No minimum or maximum word count is required; just go where the muse takes you, as long or short as you'd like.) Again, please reply with your fic under the chosen prompt set, using the appropriate header and warnings. (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

If more than one author or artist wants to work with the same prompt, have at it! The ideal goal is to make a Triple Play, where a prompt set gets both art and fic – the art potentially inspiring the fic or the fic inspiring the art. But no matter how it's sliced, we get lots of delicious Sammy h/c! Have all the fun … at Sam’s expense. ;)

Sam walks two-lane, unmarked asphalt cut through thirsty chaff. Burnblister sun, wind, grit, mudtracked cheeks and barefeet. Homes, AM signal in a thunderstorm:

Men wearing pressed pants with workboots pull back tent flaps. Rows of old-style folding steel hold generations: Moms fuss, kids fidget and grandmas fan—praying hands, printed die-cut cardstock stapled to sticks.

Sam stumbles, shuffles aside and a woman stands.

“Praise God! Praise Him!” and her arms rise. Head falls back and syllables pour forth. Latinate, Semitic, cries for Jesus, gibberish but the rows go

     “Amen!”

and

     “Speak it, Sister!”

wide-eyed and neck-twisted and the band picks on. Singers, silent, save the odd

     “Praise God!”

and

…wonderful power in the blood…

Spidery touch at his elbow. Slipperyfaced blonde in a white dress tips her chin, summons him.

“Brothers and Sisters,” boom the speakers and the congregation stirs. “Have you considered,”

     “Praise the Lord!”

“the reality,”

     “Amen!”

“of Hell?”

Sam fills a vacancy.

“Have you considered,”

     “Amen!”

“eternity? Eternity!”

     “Speak it, Preacher!”

“In the Lake of Fire?”

     “Praise Him!”

“Who will pay your debt of sin?”

     “Amen!”

“Our Dear Heavenly Father” and the people rise. “We bow our heads in humble thanks, for the blessings of this day and the brothers and sisters who gather here.”

     “Thank you, Father!”

“We thank you, Lord, for the little children,”

     “Amen!”

“for their mamas and daddies, grandmamas and granddaddies, raising them up in the Light of your Word.”

     “Praise God!”

“Yes. Thank you, Father. Praise you, Lord.” Pastor sips a sweaty cup. “We ask in humility, Father, for your hand of protection and guidance, for your servants. Stranded in a wicked land.”

And next to Sam, more tongues. Eyes crack on a pate-shined, age-bent true believer staring back and Sam thinks, Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and the old man nods, and few there be that find it.

“Amen,”

     “Amen.”

“And Amen.”

Sam

fuzzes out.

…free from your passion and pride…

And Sam sees-not-sees the tent roof billow above its skeleton above his Heavenward hands.

…cleansing at Calvary’s tide…

Syllables pour out, Latinate and Semitic, gibberish but the rows go

     “Thank you, Lord”

and

     “Tell it, Brother.”

Pinch, at the back of Sam’s neck.

…power in the blood…
…power in the blood…
…power in the blood…

So when it soaks Sam face, floods in his mouth, artery-warm

and the tongues turn Enochian

and Lucifer laughs; chest bisects like a dollhouse…

He’s not even surprised enough to scream.

     “Amen!”

     “Thank You, Father!”

and

     “Tell it—”

“Hey! Hey you all right little brother?”

Bicep vise grip and Sam’s knee bangs its favorite spot on the dash. Mouth tastes copper and pain drives out the vestiges.

“Cage again?”

Sam grunts. “More or less. Variations on a theme.”

Dean whips to the side of the road and Sam groans. Pinches his nose.

“Okay, first of all, Vicodin.” Dean points to the glove box. And, “Listen, man. You sure this is a good idea? ’Cause, I ain’t seen you this messed up since—”

“No, Dean. I let the Darkness out. Me. And if I have to sit down with Lucifer to clean that up…”

Dean studies him. Sam holds his gaze.

“Okay.” Dean grits teeth, shifts gears. “I don’t like it, but okay.”

I just really like how intimately Sam-POV this is. It's like being in his head, as it happens, watching what he sees, what he feels. The chorus of voices, the Amens, and the way the dread creeps up on you and takes Sam down, and then Dean's presence like a respite : this is very cool.
