OhSam Triple Play 2016!

It's November 2, an auspicious (if ominous) day for our darling Sam, so to herald his introduction to The Red Stuff, let's revisit an annual tradition. Welcome to the OhSam Triple Play 2016! This year, we're offering a focus on a reoccurring theme in Sam's life: blood.

"Blood" could be interpreted in many ways. Family don't end with blood. The demon blood addiction. Injury. Familial woes. Blood magicks. Simply the color red. If it can be related to blood, even vaguely? IT'S ON POINT.

BOOST THE SIGNAL

And here's how we play!

Step One (mandatory): Write a three-part prompt.
1.) Pick a setting
2.) Pick an additional character or characters (Sam is assumed, naturally.)
3.) Pick an H/C scenario, with Sam as the focus. Other characters can share the misery, but Sam should get the brunt of it. That's how we roll. :D

You can make as many prompts as your little heart desires, one set per comment, but it would probably work best if kept simple. For instance: 1.) West Virginia 2.) Dean 3.) knives, or 1.) Bobby's Panic Room 2.) Mary 3.) demon blood withdrawal.

Step Two (optional): Fill a prompt!
Participants can choose to make visual art: create a drawing, painting, photomanip, or video based around an offered prompt set. All three points must be addressed. The art can be doodled or extravagantly detailed, artist’s choice. And, of course, Sam should be the primary focus of the h/c. Please reply with your art under the prompt you choose, and either put the art beneath a cut or supply a link to it, with appropriate header and warnings! (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

Step Three (optional): Fill a prompt!
Participants could also choose to write a ficlet, again with Sam as the primary victim of our dastardly h/c scenarios. (No minimum or maximum word count is required; just go where the muse takes you, as long or short as you'd like.) Again, please reply with your fic under the chosen prompt set, using the appropriate header and warnings. (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

If more than one author or artist wants to work with the same prompt, have at it! The ideal goal is to make a Triple Play, where a prompt set gets both art and fic – the art potentially inspiring the fic or the fic inspiring the art. But no matter how it's sliced, we get lots of delicious Sammy h/c! Have all the fun … at Sam’s expense. ;)

The usual courtesies apply:
→ If you notice that your fic is not on the master list after a decent amount of time (say, three days), please poke us in a PM. We might have missed it.

FILLED: Ponderosa

[identity profile] crowroad3.livejournal.com 2016-11-12 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
FILLED: Ponderosa
Genre: horror-ish
Warning: suicidal ideation

Sam's been dead for thirty years when they find themselves in the cellar. Or that's what it feels like, with the stutter of Dean's heart and John's faint Jack-breath and the way they know, know, that time has missed them somehow, that the spell that burnt them blind had brought them to this place where--

there was a note on the table of the cabin, Sam-spiderhand, wet prints away across piney boards, away into the blackjack wood, and scraps and cuts and gobbets of bright, bright--

blood.

"He wouldn't," Dean said. He doesn't want to get away that bad.

John didn't answer, then--

"Dean!"

The first flash caught them dead in the denial, walked them back a decade without any loss of years, or sweat, or scent; tears.

"Dad!"

John's hand came down on Dean's head, and they ducked, found themselves crouched in a wet-clay hole, rough roots stabbing and scratching at their leathers, their damp flannels.

"What was that?"

" I don't--" John said, "are you hurt?"

Dean grappled for his father's coat.

"How do we--"

John's hand went wide and knocked bones, animal and human, infant and grown; cup-skull of a coyote, the stub-stalk of a phalanx.

Dean's coughed up his brother's name.

The next flash took another decade.

Another ripped them from earth and caged them, in the root-cellar where all the bodies had gone to beetle and blowdown and time. The soursop scent of the dead.

The bruja called out to them, mocked them weaponless and mad:

Why couldn't you let me eat.

Why couldn't you have left me to my bones.

Die here, with all the fathers and children.

*

The death-scent simmers all night and all night and all year a tracheal rattle out of the pine and the days lie down in despair.

Dean strips time, bark-like, in his sleep.

John fingers his pages, his failed fetishes, his fire.

"He's gonna get us out," Dean says.

It can't be all these years.

"He's dead," says John, and Dean sees, first time in all of his twenty, his fifty, how dug-in his father's sorrow is, how deep.

*

Dean's fetal, his hands almost in his father's hair, when the witch-fire scorches from above.

There's a baby-bird scrabbling, and a flight, and a pounding.

"Dean!"

Dean leaps, scrambles to pull--

"Sam!"

"Dad!"

Sam tumbles down in the dark; trails dawn after and terpene and power.

Sam pulls Dean up into day.

"How long--" Sam says, and watches his father blink awake, catch hard at his own arm.

"She's dead, " Sam says.

Dean's hand flattens to his brother's ribs.

Dean traces the singletrack, blood between his brother's eyes.

He has needles in his hair.

Wanted to do more with this; more Sam, and something different...but am so glad you like! Thank you!

What do you like best in a Sam fic? ( :

RE: FILLED: Ponderosa

[identity profile] lennelle.livejournal.com 2016-11-14 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It was perfect! I really take a lot of inspiration from your writing to think a bit more outside of the box. Your writing is so unique :)

tbh all I read are Sam fics. I love a dark fic, maybe horror, and definitely hurt!Sam, or altered Sam. Just give Sam a lot of misery, I say. And protective Dean is important. I tend to lean towards pre-series :) What do you tend to go for with fic?

RE: FILLED: Ponderosa

[identity profile] crowroad3.livejournal.com 2016-11-15 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
<3! I love the mutual inspiration of fandom. (Sometimes I lament my idiosyncratic style, because it's hard to shed, but I've been writing a long while, and well...anyway fandom's good for experimenting and trying on different things, isn't it.)

Fic I like: I'll give almost anything a try, esp. if the writing is intriguing. But Sam-fic and h/c, definitely favorites. I'm much more comfortable writing Sam than Dean, but I love both bros and definitely want protective Dean, all the protective Dean. I've never written pre-series, but I like to read it. (Other things I like: gencest, dark-ish, horror-ish, broody casefic, poetic business, straight-up caretaking, slice-of-life, strong sense of place, female characters and non-human characters, angst, ambiguity.) I need to read all your Sam-fic!

FILLED: Tree Falls
Warnings: referenced harm to animals (not graphic), co-dependency (!)

Cat got your tongue, Dean asks, toes the carcass of the two-tail. He laughs, but it's empty, soft-sounded in the spruce and cedar they're hunched under, and dark.

Sam doesn't answer. Hasn't answered since they killed it, and when he puts his hands to his neck, to his own throat, it feels like a hollow.

"Sammy," Dean says, "you're scarin' me." Somewhere off to the north a hoot, probably an owl. Probably.

It's a long walk, needles and early frost, back to the car.

*

First time Sam stopped talking he was eight.

Four-day vow of silence, sick, coloring book; saltines-only.

He's never told Dean what he saw.

*

Dean flicks, drops; they watch as ruff and marrow go up, up, watch the burn turn gold, go to ground. Sam lifts his hands, stabs at a couple of rusty signs.

Dean takes his arm, tugs his coat round like they're kids.

"Can you talk now?"

The cat-ash doesn't do it. Nothing does, and the dark drops fast in these claw-haunted woods.

Dean checks his weapon, Sam's; their salt and knives.

"Let's go."

*

Their feet crunch, snap twigs, slip, hit stones.

Dean, flashlight in one, won't take the other from Sam's belt, as if not speaking means he can't see, can't walk soft as that cat did, in the right direction.

"We're gonna figure this out," Dean says, stops for another hoot in the wood.

Sam tries to sign:

It's temporary.

Not like we use words that much anyway.

But that's lost, in the dusk, and the dark, and Dean.

*

Sam was seventeen when he met a different kind of apex, in the bathroom of a truck stop a third of the way to California. Me me me in purple on the wall, blood-whorl on the tile, terrier yipping from the cab of an eighteen-wheeler--

doesn't bear speaking of, what the monster made for, or how Sam left it, or how Sam left.

Silence. All the way to the coast.

*

"Two-tailed shapeshifting demon cat," Dean muses, rights Sam like a weak tree, guides him over a downed one.

Something like that, Sam signs, tries.

His throat hurts, but it isn't that.

"Some kinda toxin...or a curse?" Dean says. His shoulders hunch in the dark, unresolved.

The woods ebb out around them, thin and give way, with a catch of branch, to the road.

Sharp, decrescent moon.

*

Bones. In the blue-gray ranchlands north of Flagstaff (Dean drove,Sam sat stony) there were a lot of them, buried beneath. Sheep and pumps and bones, old skin.

And one Bones left behind, tail gold-dusting over the floor of the local no-kill.

Sam, still.

*

Dean puts Sam in the car and Sam lets him, lets him do sick-Sam, little brother, one who hasn't bedded with the devil, or the demon, or drunk her up, or broken the world entire. Those times.

These trees.

Dean shines light in his eyes again. Checks his pulse. Lets him twitch, annoyed. Gives him water, says--

"Sam, use your words."

Sam signs, half-hearted:

I'm OK.

Dean looks at him, skeptical, gestures at the belt like Sam's forgotten.

Never been that hard, though, to hide their silences: splits, breaks, drinks, sleeps, walks.

Baby rumbles awake.

"Two-tailed demon cat," Dean muses, puts the radio on soft:

"Wish You Were Here."

*

Sam's sick for two days, that's all. Dean brings him drinks, a frost-white blanket, calls in the cavalry and lets them, witch and angel, look at him pitywise.

"Your brother is--" Cas says, doesn't finish. But he sends Sam a burst of something, a sound like bells.

Rowena threatens to conjure up a cat, calls him Samuel, points to the cup in Dean's hand, says, that'll do more good than anything.

"Yeah, thanks," Dean says.

*

The two-tail killed three hikers, one hunter, and a hound.

*

When Sam speaks again, he doesn't say it, not quite.

"Dean?"

Dean's face in the doorway, sun at the edge of a wood.

"Hey, you're talkin'!"

Sam smiles at his brother, puts a hand to his throat.

Sometimes there's nothing there.
