Summary: Extended coda to The Man Who Knew Too Much. Cas leaves the boys behind, and Dean finds himself with one broken arm, one broken car, and one broken brother. But they've had worse, and Dean figures that as long as Sam is alive and safe and with him, they can deal with everything else. But it turns out he doesn't know the half of it. Title taken from "Stable Song" by Gregory Alan Isakov.
Warnings: Psychological trauma, insanity, allusions to torture, mildly graphic self-harm, broken bones, severe burns. (Not all for the same character.) Allusions to schizophrenia but I'm not claiming to diagnose or portray it. …Yup, that should cover it. Sammy definitely gets the short end of the stick in this story, but I'm pretty indiscriminate with the whump here, so Dean and Bobby aren't really safe either…

AN- Sorry this one took awhile. Sam's point of view doesn't come as easily to me as Dean's does but this was a fun challenge nonetheless. ...And I made the mistake of starting a new TV series, or new to me, BBC's Merlin. Three Days (Gen, R)

Start with the classic death/disappearance fic. Sam or Dean (I'll leave it up to you) dies sometime between the pilot and 3x01. The other brother angsts and searches or mourns or searches and mourns, but are unable to bring back the lost brother.
That's all preface. The meat of the story is AU Season 5. Somehow, everything else has been manipulated by demons/angels to bring Season 5 to the same starting point. (Remember, it always had to be Sam.)
Into this setting, seasons 1-2 Sam (or Dean) is brought back to life by Lucifer (or Michael). He is shocked by how his surviving brother has changed from the person he knew before dying/disappearing. He is also not at all prepared to deal with the raised stakes of an impending apocalypse and angels and/or Lucifer pressuring him to say "Yes".
