“Earth to Sam, hello,” Dean says, waving a hand in front of Sam’s face. It’s wonderful how Sam’s eyes are open and focused, how they’re fixed on Dean’s and actually seeing.
“Hello, Sam—anybody home?” Dean is starting to worry. What if it spread too far—what if there’s permanent damage (what if he still wishes he were with Jess)—what if—
“Yeah,” Sam says quietly, sitting down on the roof, leaning on his hands. “Yeah, Dean, I’m good. Thanks.”
“Don’t scare me like that, man, you could have—“
“Dean.” Sam sounds pained, brings his knees up to his chest and wraps his arms around them. “Dean, don’t.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” Dean says, sitting down beside him. “You’re okay now.” He squeezes Sam’s shoulder, and the muscles relax just the barest bit beneath his fingers.
“Yeah…” Sam’s eyes are bright in the shadows of the roof, reflecting a thousand tiny stars.
