Summary: Sam's back - not quite in the shape or form Dean would want, and with a price that might be too high for him to pay, but Sam's definitely back, and Dean's not complaining.

A/N: I wrote this several months ago - almost nine months ago, now - as a reaction-fic to the s5 finale. I have since written several post-5.22 AUs, but this one, my first, remains the one I'm most fond of.

(Looking back on this now, I find it amusing that this story - the basic concept behind it, anyway - kind of functions as a photographic negative of what eventually happens in canon s6.)
