In celebration of Sam's birthday, we're hosting another comment fic meme!

THE RULES

→ Leave a comment here with your prompt. Because it's Sam's birthday, I'm going to say that any Sam-centric prompts are okay, even if there's not much hurt/comfort in them.
→ In your prompt, please state your desired characters or pairings. All genres/pairings welcome, but no real-person prompts.

Example A: “Sam, Dean, gen, set in season 2. Sam has a vision and passes out. Cue caring!Dean and limp!Sam.”

Dean is afraid that Sam is pulling the stitches out himself and Sam won't contradict him because he thinks that maybe the demon blood running through him is eating the stitches away. Either way, Sam's not healing, just getting worst. All ends shmoopily after h/c hi-jinks ensue.

dime_for_12 wrote Sam suffers an injury that won't be fatal but that will be intensely painful for some time and/or take a long time to heal enough to get back in the hunt if it'll heal at all. Frustration, h/c, and finally he gives up and asks Dean to kill him, because he knows perfectly well he'll bounce back from that much faster.

When John picks his boys up on Sam's second birthday, he's greeted with one silent stare and one, "Papá."

Something is wrong. (Dean says nothing, but John is sure he doesn't much like that amused look on his boy's face.)

"¿Sammy, quién es?" John twists his head around and down to see a little girl, not older than Dean, perched on a pink and white bicycle (with the white wicker basket, the pink streamers, and everything) next to Sam.

Sam, beaming proudly. Sam, waddling forward two steps to cling onto John's leg. Sam, saying, "Mi papá.

"Papá, papá. Ella es mi amiga. Maria." Sam sticks to his smile and waits patiently for some reaction from John that isn't a blank, vaguely shocked, stare. John looks to Dean for some hint as to what the hell (Dean looks away) before tentatively offering the young girl a small cursory smile.

"Hola, señor." Maria climbs off of her bike to curtsey cutely, her tiny hands pulling the edges of her yellow sundress outwards.

John is spared the need to respond when Sam suddenly announces, "Papá, ¡mire!" Sam releases one hand, keeps the other clutched tightly in the fabric of John's pants, to point to various points on his own face in turn. "Mi nariz. Mi ojos. Mi boca."

"Mi hermano," Sam finishes, trotting over to stand close to Dean.

John flinches, shudders, reacts as soon as Sam detaches himself and it's a bad reaction to a bad realization.

He missed Sam's first word, more than a year ago now. He told himself it wasn't a bid deal, that he'd be around for all the other words after that. He would be there for the first time Sam says dad, sir, for the first time Sam says Impala.

Except, it is a big deal because that's Spanish that Sammy's speaking; and doesn't that just ruin every-fucking-thing.

It's not a big deal, it's not a big deal, not a big deal, not, not, not—

Except, it is a big deal because Mary wouldn't have missed Sam's first word. Mary would have taught Sam to call her mommy, call him daddy, not—

"Papá," Sam whines.

John realizes his weak smile had dropped into a frown, then deepened into a scowl. Dean had gone as far as to loop an arm protectively around Sam, as if their father was a threat.

Their father, who had been mostly absent. Their father, who had been absent so long that his youngest took up a foreign language as his first.

Their father, John, who had been a shitty father.

"Boys." John tells himself his voice didn't crack across that word. "Been taking care of each other?"

Dean nods curtly, just once. Sam doesn't respond because—for fuck's sake, Christ—Sam doesn't understand the question.

John squares his shoulders, pushes every thought of everything's wrong back and down and away, and makes a decision. "Get your stuff; we're hitting the road."

He leaves the and we're not coming back unspoken, even though Dean wouldn't care and Sam wouldn't understand, and turns to crack open the trunk of the Impala as soon as Dean starts, pulling Sam with him, back towards the house.

"Te vas con Sammy?" It's the sound of heartbreak, more than the words he only just barely understands, that stops him.

John opens his mouth, feeling it'd only be right to at least answer, but the sí, the yes, gets caught in his throat. He nods, can only nod.

Maria turns and runs before she starts to cry, but John knows what she's hiding behind her tiny fists and—and can't he do anything right.

Dean comes back, a cardboard box almost as large as his entire torso obscuring him from view until John moves to take it from him. Sam follows with a ragged pale green blanket bundled in his arms, proffering it to John once he's gotten the box settled into the trunk.

John slams the trunk shut, then reaches past the blanket and the arms and picks Sam up. Sets him down on the top of the trunk.

"Happy birthday," John says, and prays. Prays that there's enough warmth in his voice (he can do at least this right, damn it), prays that Sam will understand.

Sam doesn't, for a moment. Then Sam smiles and parrots, "Birthday."

John smiles right back; he hasn't lost everything.

Yay! I hoped someone would be brave enough to tackle this - and do so without giving us the translations. You did it perfectly - conveying just enough so the reader can figure out what is being said, but completely capturing John's sense of alien and different and loss. Which makes the happy ending all the more hopeful!

Que fabuloso! No really, this was great and heart breaking and what a wake up call for John. I'm really glad you didn't translate the Spanish either...it's always a hard call to make, but in this case it was perfect because even if the reader doesn't understand, that almost makes the story better.

:DDDD as sad as this is, the walls of language within a family, the ending is SO SWEET and I can't get little Sammy's voice speaking Spanish out of my head! now I really really want to go find spanish-language spn fic. QUE LINDO ESTE CUENTO <3

OMG. This was a challenging prompt, but you really made it work. It's quite heartbreaking, too, and I'm glad John feels remorse. (I love ickle!protective Dean, too.)

Wow, this was really good. me gustó mucho:) I'm glad someone did this, it was interesting to see where you took it. I also agree with everyone, nice job on how much español you used and not translating, etc. muy bien:)
