Summary: When Bobby is called to Japan to help with a hunt, he brings Sam along as the necessary third man - though admittedly, he would have prefered Dean. During an involuntary roadtrip through half the country, he has a lot of time to analyse why that is.

There are a lot of meta-thoughts in here. It was after Bobby's confession that he likes Dean better that I started thinking about this and since I'm not good at meta it all kind of ended up in this fic.

One thing I loved about Bobby was the fact that he was the only one who never openly resented Sam in seasons 4 and 5. His reaction after Sam got his soul back was a bit of a shock, then. And yeah, everyone always likes Dean better, but I would have liked to keep that illusion, thank you very much.

Heck, even Azazel, who by nature was all about Sam, spend more time sniffing up Dean while invading his personal space... Not to mention the good guys. I think the list of character who were more focused on Sam is very short: Ruby and Lucifer. Congratulations.

So I really wanted something, anything that showed us that Sam and Bobby had a connection, too. And when we didn't get that besices some fleething moments in scenes that focused on something else, I had to deal with the lack thereof in fic.

And I think if I read another comment along the lines of "Sam should be nicer to Dean since Dean just lost his surrogate father" I'm going to scream.

whoa, who is saying stuff like that? BECAUSE SAM IS HALLUCINATING AND LOSING HIS MIND AND BOBBY WAS HIS SURROGATE FATHER TOO THANKS FOR REMEMBERING. Gah. People.

HOLY CRAP YOUR RIGHT THO. I mean all this time its Sam with the big important destiny and nobody actually pays attention to him. The only character I would add to that list is Jess, and they SHOVED HER IN A FRIDGE!!! Man.
