(Season 8 AU) There's a good reason Sam didn't look for Dean or Kevin: Sam has post traumatic amnesia and doesn't remember the last seven or eight years, he thinks it's 2005/06. He's spent the year trying to piece together what happened to all the people he remembers still being alive: His Dad, Jess, Bobby, Dean, Pastor Jim, etc and what happened during his 'missing years'. By the time Dean returns, Sam knows what happened to him during his missing years by reading his hunting journals, but the memories and details are missing.
Dean's reaction and how he finds out is up to you.
