I am very happy to announce that we are, after several months' absence, holding a two-week celebration of Sam's birthday, starting May 2nd!
The challenge? Produce fanworks of any kind featuring Sam-centered hurt/comfort on the theme of birthdays. It can be about Sam's birthday, or anyone else's birthday, so long as you make Sam suffer for it. ;)
There is NO LIMIT to what you can produce. No minimum or maximum wordcount for fic, and we encourage all our artists/podficcers/vidders/other talented fandom folk to go crazy. You can post at any time starting on May 2nd all the way through May 16th, using the &birthday challenge tag. If you post after that, you can tag as usual, or else use the &amnesty tag as well.
I am opening this post up for prompts as well. Please specify if your prompt is for fic, art, vid or something else. That being said, if for instance an artist is inspired by a fic prompt, you should feel free to go ahead and use it.

To those who feel disappointed by the "limited" scope of this challenge, there will be general comment-fic memes happening in the future, as well as other challenges. However, I do hope that, instead of feeling as if all your hopes and dreams have been crushed, you view this instead as an opportunity to spread your creative wings and be as liberal as you'd like in interpreting the theme of a "birthday."
And for those of you who wish to offer your services as beta, please comment HERE. Remember to provide a way to contact you that you check regularly! Or track your comment thread, or check back here periodically.

Sam confesses that he's scared that this will be his last birthday since the trials are making him so sick. Charlie decides to make Sam's last birthday a great one, complete with cake and a present, which turn out to be a complete set of Harry Potter books, which she then reads to Sam.

It’s pretty awesome for awhile. Then Sam develops early-onset Alzheimers. Dean watches him fade and does his best to keep their lives as normal as possible, including birthday parties. Especially birthday parties. Sam/Dean or SamandDean.

That makes it hard to eat on a good day, but today is his birthday and Dean's going all out in the Batcave's kitchen to bake him an actual cake. Date: 2013-04-30 06:57 pm (UTC)Sam's hurt while at Stanford and as much as he loves Jess, he just wants his big brother there to fuss over him, even if he'd never admit it to anyone, not even himself. Jess tries to cheer him up by celebrating his birthday, but it's not until a surprise visit from his brother that Sam finally feels ok. Schmoop is good. Dean who steamrolls over all of Sam's objections and sees right through him is awesome. Sam who secretly delights in being cared for by his brother is the best. :)

Date: 2013-05-01 08:12 am (UTC)Prompt: These trials have been kicking Sam's ass. He feels like crap, lost weight, and can't stop coughing. It's just his luck that he feels this way on his birthday. It's the one day he hates the most out of the whole year. Nothing good has ever come from his birthday. Maybe he'll just stay under the covers in bed and hide from the day. Then nothing bad could happen right? But then there's a crash in the Batcave's kitchen and swears from Dean. It's enough for Sam to bolt out of bed thinking his birthday bad luck has struck again. What if Dean set something on fire or if he cut himself bad cooking? What if..? But upon bursting into the kitchen all Sam finds is Dean covered in flour and chocolate icing. He's noticed Sam's lost weight and decided to find the most decadent, fattening cake recipe Paula Dean had and make it for his Sammy. Of course in Winchester World, nothing goes as planned. Somehow Dean makes Sam feel better anyway.

He doesn't mind since his birthday was always connected to bad events, but Dean wants to do something to celebrate Sams birthday, because his kid brother deserves it, because of the lingering fear of losing Sam anf because he is just awesome like that. So Dean takes care of his sick brother and gives him an amazing birthday.

Since they seem to be a trouble magnet, and Sam hasn't exactly been in a celebratory mood lately anyway, they settle for getting a slightly less ratty motel room than usual and staying in for the night.
It's fine at first -- they lounge back and watch TV and drink and find comfort in the familiar back and forth. Dean is beginning to think the night might actually go well, and isn't a little normalcy the best b-day gift he could give his brother these days, anyway?
But it's the Winchester universe, and it only takes a second for things to go sour. Something (on TV? Brought up in conversation? A smell from outside? Your choice) triggers one os Sam's many traumas, and he begins to dissociate. As Dean watches his brother getting increasingly confused, unfocused and losing touch with the here and now, he finds himself having to try and bring him back.
The more vulnerable Sam and protective, reassuring. comforting Dean, the better.
