[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] ohsam
Awww! Our fledgling community already has 136 members! *beams proudly* You guys ROCK!

So in order to celebrate the glory that is hurt!sick!Sam, we are hosting a comment-fic meme. You guys probably know the drill by now, but just to be on the safe side, I'll post a couple of rules below.

I will be keeping track of the meme and compiling a master list as new stories appear.

SPREAD THE WORD

Ground Rules:

1. This is a Sam-focused hurt/comfort community, so Sam should be the one in the hurt/comforted role. Your prompts may involve sick!Sam, hurt!Sam, angsty!Sam, basically anything that results in Sam being on the receiving end of hurt/comfort. (No rules against whumping other characters as well, of course, but you have to whump Sam first. ;) )

2. Comment to this post with your desired characters or pairings, and a prompt. All genres/pairings are welcome, BUT no RPF/RPS, please. Please focus on the fictional characters only.

Example A: “Sam, Dean, gen, set in season 2. Sam has a vision and passes out. Cue caring!Dean and limp!Sam.”
Example B: “Sam/Dean, trauma. Sam is injured on a hunt, Dean freaks out when he thinks Sam might be dead.”

3. You can leave as many prompts as you like, but please write one prompt per comment. If you've got a few (and feel free to prompt at will!), comment with each separately. This is to keep the meme manageable.

4. Your prompts can be as short or as detailed as you’d like. i.e. "Sam, Dean. Fever." Or a three-paragraph epic with details. The more detailed your prompt, the less wriggle room you're giving the writer, though, so bear that in mind.

5. Scroll through the comments and when you find a prompt you like, write a fic in reply to the comment. There is no word count limit.

6. More than one comment-fic response to a prompt is totally acceptable, and in fact encouraged. The more fic, the better!

7. When replying to a prompt with your comment-fic, put ‘FILLED’ in your subject line and then anything else you want, ie: a title if you have one/part numbers. It’s not a big deal if you forget this step, but it will make it easier for people to find your fic, and for me when I’m compiling the master list.

8. Anonymous posting is enabled, but I haven't figured out whether I.P. logging is off because I suck at this sort of thing. If you're embarrassed by how schmoopy your prompts are, don't worry, we won't tell on you. ;)

9. No spoilers for future episodes. NONE. We will send Missouri after you with a spoon.

10. Standard rules of politeness apply. Do NOT bash any characters. Do NOT say rude things to prompters and writers. In short, don't be a douchebag. The mods will ruthlessly delete any ridiculousness we see.

11. Questions about the meme? Comments? PM your mods! We will be happy to answer your queries.

12. Do feed your authors! They’re awesome. Feedback is THE BEST DRUG EVER.

13. If you want to advertise this, that’s fantastic! It would be really appreciated. Just copy and paste the code provided above into your journal.

In conclusion, have FUN!

Master List

[livejournal.com profile] redrum669: Season 5 Sam needs to be forgiven and loved regardless of what he is and what he's done. For the love of God, do it! Gen, Slash, whatever. Just get that boy some damned hugs.

[livejournal.com profile] pkwench: Permanent injury. Any flavour.

[livejournal.com profile] blubird_pie: I'd love to see both boys get taken (for whatever reason) and Dean cares/comforts a distressed young Sam whilst in captivity.

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12: Are you brave enough to kill one of them? Your choice. Sam's either in agony and dying. Or Sam's trying to hold it together while Dean's slipping away.

[livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics: Pre-series: Sam's first week in the dorms at Stanford. He draws a single room and is shyly buying a plant, school supplies, and congratulating himself on making his tiny little room a home. Trouble is? He can't sleep. No matter how much he tries to wear himself out, he can’t sleep without Dean. Gen or slash is fine.

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12:Sam is shut down and hurting after Jess dies. Dean takes care of him through the next few days and the funeral.

[livejournal.com profile] blubird_pie: Season 5 Dean finds himself with DeAged Sam & he'd forgotten how much that kid like hugs - especially when scared.

[livejournal.com profile] blood_ecstasy: Wee!Sam gets the chicken pox and Dean gets to deal with it. I expect there to be lots of whining, smacking hands off of itchy spots, and tomato rice soup.

[livejournal.com profile] dither_river: Sam is shut down and hurting after Jess dies. Dean takes care of him through the next few days and the funeral.

[livejournal.com profile] annonwrite: Sam had a bad back and it hurts. A LOT. Dean makes fun of him. Then Dean realizes how bad it is. Then Dean feels guilty.

[livejournal.com profile] callistosh65: On a hunt in midwinter, Sam almost freezes to death. Dean finds him blue-lipped and still in a snowbank, gets him inside + takes care of him.

[livejournal.com profile] authoressnebula: From episode Swap Meat: Sam-in-teenage-boy's body has an asthma attack. Dean helps.

[livejournal.com profile] wicked_crayon: Sam agrees to let Michael try him on for size. It's an extremely, extremely bad fit and lasts for all of maybe a minute. Agony, issues of self worth, and one distraught, angry older brother are the result.

[livejournal.com profile] slsh_lvr08: A younger Sam gives birth on Dean's lap. Impala.

[livejournal.com profile] annonwrite: Early S1, Sam gets a cold/flu from not sleeping. Possibly also related to going swimming with his clothes on (1.3) or riding on an airplane (1.4)?

[livejournal.com profile] ancastar: S5 Sam is out of his head with fever for whatever reason. Thinks Dean is Ruby and that his brother is still in Hell.

[livejournal.com profile] pkwench: Sam's trapped inside his body with Lucifer in control. His thoughts/anguish/fighting to break free as Lucifer kills present!Dean and confronts past!Dean.

[livejournal.com profile] ratherastory: Crucifixion. *cough*

[livejournal.com profile] rosestoo: Michael and Lucifer face off in their best Winchester suits. Michael wins and sends Lucifer back to hell. He also sends Sam with him. Dean goes to find his brother. Sam suffers. A lot.

[livejournal.com profile] shyriann: S5 Sam is out of his head with fever for whatever reason. Thinks Dean is Ruby and that his brother is still in Hell.

[livejournal.com profile] ratherastory: Eye patch Sam! Sam loses one of those pretty eyes and has to cope with altered visual perception and looking like a pirate. Dean is awesome, over protective, angry as hell that this happened to Sam, and a completely amusing little shit.

[livejournal.com profile] sytaxia: After Sam has gone through detox after My Bloody Valentine he's still weak and feverish. Dean and Cas take care of him.

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12: Aftermath of Mystery Spot. Sam in serious fucking trauma, Dean slowly realizing the extent of what happened (hundred days of watching him die, six months without him). Sam needs to touch him at night to know he's real, afraid to sleep because he may wake up back in the Trickster's world without Dean, etc.

[livejournal.com profile] authoressnebula: 5x14. At the end of the ep, Sam locks himself inside the panic room using the original locking system (keep those inside safe from those outside). They've added anti-angel protection since last time so neither Dean nor Castiel can break in.

[livejournal.com profile] 4422shini: The semi-bulletproof advantages of being marked as the devil's chosen vessel - being able to get between your brother and bullets. Trouble is? It fucking hurts, reapers turn their backs to you/hide behind their hands when you die, being brought back to life is scary, and your brother is really fucking pissed off at you for having done it.

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12Something involving a bullet wound. Either one that Dean has to clean and stitch up or one that is already healed.

[livejournal.com profile] wicked_crayon: Sam's absolutely terrified to drive, feels just as guilty over John's death as Dean, has the occasional nightmare, and refuses to get behind the wheel.

[livejournal.com profile] ratherastory: Sam and Dean go undercover as Manly!Maids to investigate a haunting. Sadly, Sam has a dust allergy and just keeps sneezing.

[livejournal.com profile] pixymisa:Sam's always eaten more healthy than Dean, but he does have the occasional greasy burger. However, Dean's noticed since 4x22 Sam's eaten nothing but salads at every meal. They don't even have any meat in them. Can that be healthy? (Sam's gone vegetarian after quitting demon blood, avoiding the taste of anything even remotely like blood/meat.)

[livejournal.com profile] dante_s_hell: After Jump the Shark, Sam was bleeding so profusely. Surely there should be some h/c after that? :) He'd be weak and in pain and unable to do a lot of things for a few days after that.

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12:
Aftermath of "Heart." As soon as they walk out of that apartment, Sam falls back in the same place he was after Jess's death, except worse because it's the second time it's happened and he had to pull the trigger this time. He's shut down, doesn't want to talk, and Dean has to pull him out of it.

[livejournal.com profile] pixymisa: a severely injured S5 Sam gets sent to the past and is met by his preseries self/S1 self.

[livejournal.com profile] saberivojo: Pre-series, Sam is cleaning the knives at his father's request, and Dean's out for the night. In typical teenage boy fashions, screws around with them, trying out fight fighting moves he's not ready for. He cuts himself and tries to hide it from John, but John finds out.

[livejournal.com profile] saberivojo: Old Weschesters. It's no secret that Sam doesn't have as good of a seat on a horse as Dean does...

[livejournal.com profile] dime_for_12: Michael and Lucifer face off in their best Winchester suits. Michael wins and sends Lucifer back to hell. He also sends Sam with him. Dean goes to find his brother. Sam suffers. A lot.

[livejournal.com profile] faye_dartmouth: Some baddie is beating the crap out of our boy. The beating could be physical (fists and feet) or more magic related (along the lines of what happened to Dean in the season one finale). Dean is being forced to watch, but cannot intervene. All Sam has to do to get the whumping to stop is to tell the baddie to go pick on Dean instead. But he won't. No matter how much Dean begs him to.

[livejournal.com profile] pkwench: Wee!Chesters - Sam experiences night terrors.

[livejournal.com profile] melanth0: Sam goes insane. Not, oh, I'm a little crazy, but INSANE in whatever form you choose and Dean must reach him somehow.

[livejournal.com profile] m14mouse: The shifter in Skin really worked Sam over good. Some Dean taking care of him after and the two of them not dealing with what the shifter told Sam.

[livejournal.com profile] rosestoo: Michael and Lucifer face off in their best Winchester suits. Michael wins and sends Lucifer back to hell. He also sends Sam with him. Dean goes to find his brother. Sam suffers. A lot.

[livejournal.com profile] m14mouse: Wee!Chesters - A very wee Sam gets separated from John & Dean and winds up in protective services. He's sent to a state home while they try to figure out who he is, what to do with him. Sam does not thrive in this new environment and keeps looking under his bed and in the wardrobe, closets, big scary industrial kitchen, basements, attic ... everywhere for Dean and his Dad.

[livejournal.com profile] tifaching: History is littered with stories of brothers. This is one of them. Two brothers set out to save the world. The cost is high and the older brother is lost. It's said that the younger brother walks the country calling for him. From Maine to Kansas to Oregon, he walks. In torment, looking. Always looking. There are those that hunt things like him and they try, they do, but there are no bones to burn, no spells that will cast him out, no rituals that will ease his suffering. The only way to put this tormented spirit to rest lies in summoning the brother to take him home.

[livejournal.com profile] vail_kagami: Castiel takes care of Sam and Dean when Sam comes out of the panic room in 5.14.

[livejournal.com profile] vail_kagami: Following their separation in Good God Y'all, Sam gets a ride from someone allied against him. 'Break him,' they said. So the bad man, rapes him to a bloody mess.

Sorry, everyone. Spammers have found this entry, so I have to freeze all remaining comment threads. I think we're safe, it's a pretty old comment-fic meme. If anyone absolutely needs to comment here, PM me to let me know, okay? ~[livejournal.com profile] ratherastory

It’s a cold, cloudy morning – just the kind Dean likes. They’ve wrapped up the hunt in Wisconsin, and he thinks they’re both glad they’re putting that one in the rearview mirror. Now it’s on to Pennsylvania, something about an airline and a plane crash, which Dean is admittedly less than thrilled about. But keeping busy is a good distraction from their missing father and Sam’s dead girlfriend, so he’ll take it. Plus, they’ve got a solid 11 hour drive between here and there. Just the open road, some classic rock, and…

Sniff.

…and Sam’s sniffling from the passenger seat. It’s been around since they woke up this morning, though neither brother has referenced it yet. He supposes it makes sense that Sam might come down with the sniffles. After all, he hasn’t been sleeping much…

Sniff. Sniff. Cough. Sniff.

…and that dip in the freezing, disgusting Wisconsin lake probably didn’t help. Dean’s immune system has been kept consistently strong thanks to plenty of physical activity, greasy diner food, and being exposed to every germ on the planet in grungy motel rooms. Sam, on the other hand, has probably been in the clean Stanford bubble for too long to be immune to anything.

Sniiiiifff.

Thus, the sniffing. Dean shifts a sideways glance. “You alright?”

“Yeah. Just,” Sam motions noncommittally in the general direction of his nose. Then sniffs again. “I’m good.”

It’s a good enough response for Dean, so he settles in for the drive as they merge onto the expressway. A few snowflakes hit the windshield. It’s the first snow they’ve seen this year, and though Dean would never admit to it, he does think it’s kind of pretty. Kind of calming.

Sniff. Cough. Sniff.

Dean nudges the volume knob to the right a little, and the soothing sounds of Metallica fill the car. Dean half-waits for a protest from Sam, but none come. He smirks a little and bangs the steering wheel in time with the music, his own personal drum set.

Snnnniiiiiiiffffffff. Cough. Choke.

The snowflakes start to fall a little harder, a little faster, and soon the ground is covered. Dean’s surprised that it’s cold enough for the flakes to stick, but it must be. He lays off the gas a little, deciding that following the speed limit might be a good idea until the weather eases up.

Sniff. Sniffle. Snort.

Dean’s hands tighten on the steering wheel when he sees brake lights up ahead. He slows in response, and crawls along at about 35 miles per hour. He shifts from one lane to the other, but neither lane seems to be moving much at all, and soon they’re at a complete standstill.

Sniff.

“Why are we stopped?” Sam asks, his voice sounding much more nasal and annoying than it did a little while ago.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Dean says, craning his neck in case he can see anything up ahead.

“Might be left over from rush hour.”

Sniff.

“Doubt it. We’re in the middle of nowhere.”

“Maybe an accident from the snow, then.”

Dean just grunts in response. He hates traffic, hates brake lights…

Sniiifffff. Snort.

…and hates when his day gets off to a bad start. It doesn’t bode well for the 650 miles they have in front of them. He honks the horn at no one in particular, but it makes him feel a little better.

Sam turns the speaker volume down a little bit. “Sorry,” he says when Dean eyes him warily. “I’m getting a headache. That doesn’t help much.”

Of course Sam is getting a headache. Of course he is.

Over the next half-hour, they drive approximately half a mile, and Dean still can’t see any reason for the traffic back-up. A cop drives by on the shoulder at one point, but that’s about it. The snow is falling steadily, and he no longer thinks it’s pretty or calming.

Sniff.

And of course, there’s that. Dean is trying really hard not to say anything about his brother’s snot, but the traffic and weather are making him reach his breaking point a lot faster than normal. His fingers are tight on the steering wheel and he feels like a rubber band that’s stretched too far…

Snnnniiiiiiffffff.

Snap. Dean reaches over and slams open the glove box, grabbing a handful of napkins from various drive-thru restaurants. “Here,” he says, shoving them none too gently into Sam’s hand. “Blow some of that shit out of your head because if you sniff one more time I’m going to punch you in the face and I’m not going to feel bad about it either.”

Sam looks at Dean incredulously, like he’s not quite sure where that outburst came from. Dean just stares out the windshield, hands tapping the steering wheel a little harder than they need to. Sam takes the advice, though, and fills a napkin with snot. It sounds thick and disgusting, and Dean tries to focus on the music.

By the fourth napkin, the snot is starting to let up, and it sounds like Sam might be able to breathe a little bit better. He leans his head back and moans. Some of Dean’s anger melts. “Head still hurts?”

“Yeah.”

“Want to take something?”

“No.”

“Why don’t you try to get some sleep, then? We’re obviously not going anywhere too soon.”

Sam almost snickers. “Yeah. Sleep. Okay.”

And a little more of Dean’s anger dissipates when he remembers that it’s highly unlikely Sam will be getting any sleep at all.

Twenty more minutes pass with top speeds of 25 miles per hour. Thankfully, the only sound in the car is the radio, as Sam seems to be breathing better. The road conditions don’t seem to be getting any better and there’s no end to the traffic in sight, so Dean fumbles under his seat until he finds the map of this area. He spreads it out over the steering wheel.

“Here,” Sam offers. “I’ll look for an alternate route.”

For a minute Dean had forgotten there’s someone there to help him out. That he doesn’t have to do everything on his own.

Sniff.

And that’s why he can ignore that particular noise for a few minutes.

“It looks like there’s an exit about a mile and a half up,” Sam says, needing to stop to clear some of the phlegm out of his throat. It makes him cough. “A side road runs parallel to the expressway, then merges back on the other side of town. At this point, that will probably be faster.”

“Yeah,” Dean agrees, happy that there might be an end to this traffic in sight. “Thanks, Sam.”

Instead of answering, Sam suddenly sneezes with force that seems to come from the very bottom of his 6’ 4” frame. He doesn’t even have time to cover his face or drop the map, and he sprays snot everywhere four times in quick succession.

“Shit,” Dean says, pulling the contaminated map away with the very tips of his fingers.

This time Sam doesn’t need to be prodded to grab the napkins, filling five more without a break. “Sorry,” he says when he’s done.

Dean hands the map back to him, hoping the names to the roads they need aren’t wet and blurred. Sam coughs, but this time manages to get the crook of his arm in front of his mouth first. Dean cracks the window, feeling suffocated by the germs and his own frustration, and the cool air makes him feel a little better. “What color is your snot?” Dean asks. It’s his way of asking Sam what this is: a simple cold, allergies, or an infection.

Sam wrinkles his nose as he peers inside one of the used napkins. “Green.”

Infection it is. Perfect. Of course.

Sniff.

Sniff.

Snot.

“Come on,” Dean pleads under his breath, though the drivers in the cars in front of him can’t hear and can’t do anything about it anyways. This is Wisconsin. People should be able to drive in the snow. Fucking northern states.

They drive another mile, and Dean is more excited than necessary when he sees the sign for the exit they’re looking for. Hallelujah.

“Dean?” The “n” in Sammy’s voice is thick and pathetic sounding.

“Yeah?”

“Can you roll the window back up?”

Dean glances over to see that Sam is huddled deep inside his jacket, shivering. “Shit,” he mutters under his breath. He rolls up the window and flicks the heat on high, even though he doesn’t think it’s that cold. “You getting a fever?” Without waiting for an answer, he presses his hand to Sam’s forehead. Surprisingly, his touch isn’t swatted away, and it’s obvious that his brother’s temperature is on the rise. “Shit,” he mutters again.

Sniff.

Sam closes his eyes and shivers and Dean inches them forwards towards the exit, keeping the music quiet enough to let Sam rest but loud enough to soothe his own nerves. The exit is backed up, too. Obviously they’re not the only ones who had the same idea. It does move a little faster than the expressway, though, and the snow seems to be letting up. Dean hopes he doesn’t jinx himself when he thinks that maybe the worst of the day is behind them.

Cough. Shiver. Sniff.

Then again, maybe not. Sam’s bodily soundtrack battles with Metallica, but Dean feels a lot better when they’re traveling more than 30 miles per hour again. The road is covered with snow, but he knows his baby can handle this slight detour until they get back on track.

They pass a small town and are almost back to the expressway and…

Bang. Pop. Hiss.

Okay. Dean knows his brother is making some entirely disgusting noises with his bodily fluids today, but he’s pretty sure those weren’t some of them. He’s also pretty sure that the jerking and bumping the car is doing can’t be blamed on Sam’s shivering frame.

“What was that?” Sam asks, a few beats too late, reflexes likely slowed by his fever.

“Don’t know.” Dean eases the car to the side of the road. “Stay put,” he says, then gets out and tugs at the waist of his jeans, ready to investigate. It’s instantly obvious what the problem is. The left-rear tire is flat as a pancake. “Shit.” It’s a problem fitting in with the rest of the day’s luck, but it’s nothing Dean can’t handle. He opens the trunk and pulls out everything he’ll need, including the spare tire and the jack.

He’s on the snowy ground, the lugs already loosened, raising the car on the jack, when there’s a sickening crack. Dean moves his hand and part of the jack comes with it. “Fuck.” The car’s stuck where it is. Not far up enough to change the tire. Not low enough to do anything else. “Fuck. Shit. Damn.”

Sniff. Cough. Snort.

Dean takes a deep breath that is supposed to be calming but at this moment, he’s not really buying into that shit. He walks around to the passenger window and motions for Sam to roll it down. He can’t help but notice that Sam is looking worse by the minute, probably on his way to death warmed over.

“What’s wrong?”

“Tire’s flat and the jack just broke off in my hand. Gonna have to walk back to town and get a new one.”

“How far back?”

Dean shrugs. “A couple of miles.” He thinks that maybe someone will take pity on him and give him a ride, but with their luck, that’s probably not likely.

“Want me to come with you?”

“No way, dude. You stay here.” He hands Sam the keys. “Turn the car on every once in a while. Try to keep warm and get some rest.”

“Okay. Be careful.”

“Yeah. Hopefully I’ll be back soon.”

Sniff. Sniff. Cough.

“Soon” ends up being a relative term as he’s proven right and the three cars that do drive by don’t even slow down when they see Dean walking through the snow. His jeans are soaked almost up to his knees, he’s freezing, and he thinks that maybe the town was a little farther back than he thought.

He’s swearing up a storm with every step when he sees a gas station up the road and to the left. He wants to cheer, but he’s too pissed off to do that. He enters the convenience store and just stands inside the door for a minute, stomping off snow and taking in the warmth.

“Still nasty out there?” the lady at the check-out asks, flipping a page in the magazine in front of her.

“You think?” Dean snaps. He heads down the first aisle and starts shoving supplies into his arms: another jack, a box of tissues, several bottles of cold medicine, cough drops, juice, and the biggest bag of peanut M&M’s he can find in the place. Make that two. Last but not least, he picks up a bottle of his favorite brand of whiskey.

He makes his way to the counter and drops everything all over the cashier’s magazine. She raises an eyebrow at him before starting to ring up his items.

“Rough day?”

“You could say that. Can you double bag those?” The cashier seems content to oblige, though she’s obviously not in any big hurry. “Is there a motel nearby?”

She nods her head towards the door. “Up the road about half a mile. It’s nothing special, but it’ll get you out of this weather.”

It’s just the answer Dean is looking for. She tells him the ridiculously high total and he uses a credit card that should be good for a few more days, including the price of a motel room.

“You have a nice day now,” she says and Dean actually laughs.

Not fucking likely.

Dean trudges through the snow and of course the walk back feels about twice as long as the walk there. When he makes it back to the car, he heads the driver’s side door. A light dusting of snow is covering the windows, but he can see Sam in the passenger seat.

Sniff.

“Honey, I’m home,” Dean says, sounding none too cheery about it. Sam blinks blearily in his direction, and it’s obvious that the fever is on the rise. “You doing okay?”

Cough. Sniff. Shiver.

“Yeah.”

“Give me a few minutes to change the tire and we’ll be out of here, alright?”

“Okay.”

Dean returns to the snowy ground and wedges out the broken jack before replacing it with the new one. Thankfully, the rest of the tire changing goes off without a hitch, and soon the spare is in place, the trashed one in the trunk.

When Dean gets back in the car, he immediately starts the car and turns the heat to high, both for Sam’s sake as well as his own. Sam wipes a generous quantity of snot on the sleeve of his jacket.

“Dude. Seriously? Gross.”

Sam just shrugs a little. “We’re out of napkins.”

Dean reaches for the backseat where he threw the rest of the supplies and pulls out the box of tissues. “Here,” he says, ripping them open and giving them to Sam. “I even splurged for the ones with the fucking Vitamin E in them. You’re starting to look like Rudolf.”

Sam snorts which turns into a cough before blowing more snot into a tissue. The poor kid really is disgusting. “Thanks.”

Dean eases the car back onto the road and makes sure traffic is clear before performing a U-turn.

“Where are you going?” Sam asks.

“Motel.”

“But Pennsylvania…”

“…will wait until you’re not a walking bucket of phlegm and we’re not having the worst damn luck in the history of the world. We’ll try again tomorrow.”

Sniff.

Both boys are quiet as they drive to the motel the cashier told him about, which ends up being exactly what she described. Dean checks them in and carries in their supplies. Sam toes off his boots as soon as he’s in the door and crawls under the covers of one of the beds. Dean flicks the heater up to high. It’s a little bit noisy, but seems to be putting out a lot of heat, so that’s fine by him.

“Here,” Dean says, giving Sam the thermometer from their first aid kit before he can fall asleep. While he waits for the mercury to rise, he opens up the many bottles of medicine he bought and gets water from the bathroom, choosing the glass that doesn’t have a lipstick stain on the rim.

Once everything is set, he sits on the edge of the bed next to Sam. His eyes are glassy and fever is bright on his cheeks, so he’s not surprised when the mercury hovers a little over 102. Dean coerces Sam into sitting up for a minute and proceeds to give him generous doses of Tylenol, Nyquil, and some other medicine that had “sinus” in the name that would probably deal with the massive quantities of snot.

Once that’s complete, Dean continues emptying the bags, putting the orange juice and cough drops on the table next to Sam. The M&M’s and whiskey he keeps for himself.

“Need anything else?”

“’M good.”

Dean knows that he isn’t really good, but hopefully the medication will change that soon, or at least trick him into something close. “Okay. I’ll be right here if you need anything.” He flops onto the other bed, stretching out and noticing that his jeans are almost dry. He breaks open the whiskey and takes a long pull from the bottle. That followed by a few M&M’s are exactly what he needs to bring his blood pressure back down to normal. He clicks on the TV, and is pleased to see that this motel has cable.

He’s warming up and there’s whiskey in his belly, and he thinks a nap might be in order for him, too.

“Hey, Sammy?”

“Yeah?”

“No more jumping in balls-cold nasty lakes, okay?”

“Deal.”

Dean crunches a few more candies as his own eyes grow heavy.

“Hey, Dean?”

“Yeah?”

“Save some whiskey for me, okay?”

“Deal.”

With that, Sammy falls asleep, snoring ever so slightly but breathing deep, and it’s the best sound Dean’s heard in a while.

I like the way you show Dean getting back into the rhythm of having Sam there and taking care of Sam. Poor Sam!

Sorry your day has been long, but I'm glad this was what you were hoping for. Thank you for the kind words and for the prompt! I love S1 Sam and Dean, and this was fun to write!

Hope your day is better tomorrow...
