Because someone said Yes when they should have said No, and someone else paid the price.

Poor Sam. He really has had a terrible time from all sides. The angels are just as bad as the demons - worse actually because you expect that kind of behavior from a demon. I am glad that Dean is making efforts to show affection to Sam when he can - I think that is a big help to the poor kid.
