The comm hosted this little event a couple of years ago, and as November 2 is an auspicious day for our darling Sam, today would be the perfect time to revisit this challenge. Welcome to the Triple Play 2015!

BOOST THE SIGNAL

And here's how we play!

Step One (mandatory): Write a three-part prompt.
1.) Pick a setting
2.) Pick an additional character or characters (Sam is assumed, naturally.)
3.) Pick an H/C scenario, with Sam as the focus. Other characters can share the misery, but Sam should get the brunt of it. That's how we roll. :D

You can make as many prompts as your little heart desires, one set per comment, but it would probably work best if kept simple. For instance: 1.) the Impala 2.) Dean 3.) a hangover, or 1.) autumn 2.) Rowena 3.) a curse.

Step Two (optional): Participants can choose to make visual art: create a drawing, painting, photomanip, or video based around an offered prompt set. All three points must be addressed. The art can be doodled or extravagantly detailed, artist’s choice. And, of course, Sam should be the primary focus of the h/c. Please reply with your art under the prompt you choose, and either put the art beneath a cut or supply a link to it, with appropriate header and warnings! (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

Step Three (optional): Participants could also choose to write a ficlet, again with Sam as the primary victim of our dastardly h/c scenarios. (No minimum or maximum word count is required; just go where the muse takes you, as long or short as you'd like.) Again, please reply with your fic under the chosen prompt set, using the appropriate header and warnings. (See "Posting Guidelines" in the left sidebar.) As subject lines are no more, please begin your fills with the word FILLED and a TITLE in BOLD.

If more than one author or artist wants to work with the same prompt, have at it! The ideal goal is to make a Triple Play, where a prompt set gets both art and fic – the art potentially inspiring the fic or the fic inspiring the art. But no matter how it's sliced, we get lots of delicious Sammy h/c! Have all the fun … at Sam’s expense. ;)

The usual courtesies apply:
→ If you notice that your fic is not on the master list after a decent amount of time (say, three days), please poke us in a PM. We might have missed it.
→ Anon posting enabled.
→ NO SPOILERS FOR UNAIRED EPISODES.
→ Play nice - no flaming and no character bashing, period. Any comments that break this rule will be deleted without warning.
→ Feedback is catnip for writers. Leave some author-love!
→ No spam comments.
→ Contact one of the mods if you have a question.
→ Spread the Sam love - pimp this meme!

The world was quiet. Quiet after the storm, Dean figured, or maybe just exhaustion following the fight. People went about trying to rebuild, silence dogging their footsteps, like if they were quiet enough, no one would come to tear away what they cared about.

Of course, there were those who went about things in the exact opposite manner.

"If you're going to get high, could you at least do it when there isn't work to be done?" Dean growled.

Cas swayed a little. "None of this work matters," he returned loudly. "I don't see why you care."

He was impossible. Dean turned away, only to find Sam standing behind him. Dean barely managed to avoid flinching.

"Why aren't you working?" he asked gruffly, to cover up his discomfort.

Sam pointed upwards. Clouds were rolling in, thunderous and dark. Irritation buzzed through Dean's body, making his words too sharp. "Well, I guess there's no work anywhere, then," he told Sam, "it's not like we're living in cabins in total squalor. Oh, wait-"

Sam's bony shoulders slumped. He limped away, left leg dragging as always.

"I may be high, but at least I'm not that mean," Cas observed.

"Shut up, Cas."

***

Dean didn't really know what had happened to Sam. He'd been the devil, and then the devil was gone, and Sam showed up at camp, looking like he'd gotten into a fight with a chainsaw.

it had taken months for Sam to recover. He'd had a dislocated right hip, with deep scarring in a spiral around the entire leg, leading Dean to believe he'd been dragged with chains by that leg. His entire back was flayed open, leading to infection after infection. His face . . . well, children tended to scream when they saw Sam, so Sam had started letting his hair grow long to cover up the twisted scar tissue and missing eye.

Dean still didn't know if Sam had lost his tongue, or simply his will to talk. He hadn't asked.

Dean entered their cabin, feeling an ache in his knees from the incoming storm. Sam looked up at his entry, good eye widening slightly before hunching down again over the floorboards.

"You make a crappy Cinderella," Dean said. The old Sam would have given him a bitchy expression and snapped back some retort about Dean's knowledge of fairytales.

This Sam continued to scrub at the floor.

Dean sighed, feeling exhausted and empty and guilty, always guilty.

"No, Sam, you're supposed to smoke it."

Dean almost kept walking. Almost.

"What are you doing, Cas?"

Cas scowled. He was twitching, so obviously he wasn't high yet. "I was attempting to allay some of Sam's pain, but he won't cooperate."

"Yeah, that's just what we need. Sam addicted to something else," Dean muttered.

"Well, the benefits of--" Cas started.

Dean's brain caught up to what Cas had said. "Wait, Sam's pain?"

Cas looked at Dean, entirely sober and entirely unamused. "Dean, will you stay on topic for once?"

Dean ignored him. "Sam, what pain?" he asked sharply.

Sam's eye gazed at him uncertainly. He seemed to deliberate for a moment, and then shook his head.

"No? No what, no pain?"

Cas snorted.

"Stay out of this," Dean growled at him. "Sam, answer me."

Sam shook his head again. Dean breathed heavily through his nose. Striding forward, he yanked Sam to his feet and dragged him out of Cas's place, ignoring the ex-angel's whining and Sam's bad leg. Only when he got into their cabin did he let go of Sam and turn on him.

"What are we doing here, Sam?" he asked. "How did we get into this mess in the first place? Lying to each other. So you want to start that game again?"

Sam's hazel eye looked too bright, too wet. Dean scrambled for his righteous anger. "Well, we aren't going anywhere, Sam. If you don't trust me to talk to me or tell me about what's going on with you, then we might as well give up, right?"

A tear slid down Sam's cheek. Dean's anger was struggling to stay alive. Sam opened his mouth, and Dean inadvertently flinched at the sight of Sam's mangled tongue. Sam closed his mouth, bowing his head.

"Hey. Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. You could . . . you could write, y'know? Or we could come up with some kind of sign language, right?

Sam's face was nearly impossible to read at the best of times, stiff scar tissue keeping his expressions flat and hard. But Dean caught the widening of his eye, the twitch of his fingers.

Dean cleared his throat. "All I'm sayin' is, I know I'm a jerk, but I, uh, I wouldn't be opposed to you putting me in my place like you should be."

He waited a second, but Sam seemed to be processing. Dean rubbed a hand over his face. "Something for you to think about," he muttered, turning away.

He was stopped by a hand on his shoulder--the first time Sam had reached for him since he'd been back. Dean turned, feeling something eerily like hope.

Sam looked at him through his shaggy hair.

And raised his middle finger.

I love this world, this era, I want more. *grabby hands* Honestly? This is the first fill (though there have been many wonderful fills for this event; I'm so proud of us!) that has made me want to do art. This will get art. I love stoner Cas and surly, weary Dean and oh my God, Sam. Did I say I loved this world?

This will get art.

Wonderful and so bittersweet (which is my favourite flavour of fic!)

I love end!verse, particularly your chosen AU time line of it, and I love how you jumped straight into the heart of the fic, sprinkling pieces of backstory but only where necessary. I loved Cas, and harsh and bitter Dean, and poor haunted, wounded, and disfigured Sam (I love how you don't go into details about his injuries or how he got them, which makes it more horrifying, I think).

The ending couldn't have been more perfect!!! Thank you for sharing (and \o/ I do hope we get quickreaver art for this!!!)

LOVE! This was so sad and bittersweet and then the ending just made me LOL because it's so them, even in this damaged, awful, post-apocalyptic world. Thank you so much for the fill!

Author here! To anyone who might care, I ended up expanding this and posting it on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/5765293 & on FFN: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11705591/1/Words-Like-Shattered-Glass
and I'm working on a sequel. Personally I kind of like this short version better, but I guess you can judge for yourselves :)
