Summary: A man wakes up in a ruined wasteland, without memories, without a name, without knowing the strange guy who claims he used to be an angel, or that he once had a little brother. All he knows is that the world is dying, everyone is lying to him and that somehow, somewhere, something went terribly wrong. Because someone said Yes when they should have said No, and someone else paid the price.
Masterpost
Throwing a glare at Dean, Cas says, “So you do want to discuss this after all? I’m warning you, mentioning your brother is probably not to be avoided.”

Date: 2011-08-05 07:42 pm (UTC)Well! This chapter was VERY MUCH WORTH THE WAIT, and an excellent birthday present! I loved it, all the little snippets of Dean remembering things, and the almost throwaway thought that he wanted Sam back because nothing was okay without him that was probably buried so deep he didn't even really register it. And Ruth showing him the picture was so sweet. Also, I totally thought they were going to Bobby's house, although them saying that the man was killed before the war probably should have tipped me off. But when they started talking about church and priest I had a major squee, because I love Pastor Jim even if he only shows up once in the actual show.
Dean still doesn’t know what kind of game his heavenly companion is playing. He only knows that every side wants to use him for something, and no side is willing to let him make his own decisions.
So I just kind went "WELCOME TO YOUR BROTHERS LIFE" at this line. Because really, Sam has been used by demons since the night he turned 6 months old, with demons influencing him for probably his entire life without him knowing it, and when he tried to do what he thought was the right thing it turned out that both angels and demons were setting him up to fail and pushing him down a bad path. Every time Sam has tried to make his own decision, someone has actually been playing him. And the one time he really made his own choice, he got a knife through the spine for his trouble. So I really like that you're having the same thing happen to Dean, and I kinda hope that Dean kind of understands what Sam went through after this. Really, I hope that Dean and Sam can somehow be reunited by the end of this at all ^_^
LORDY, that was long! Um, this was fantastic and awesome and I love it and I can't wait for more! =D

Date: 2011-08-05 09:29 pm (UTC)First of all: Happy Birthday! I hope you had a great day!
Yes, Jena's the psycho-chick from the beginning. She's actually pretty important.
And let me tell you, I am so happy you noticed the parallel between Dean's situation and Sam's, because I absolutley worded it like that on purpose and wondered if anyone would notice! What also played into it is that Dean himself has (maybe unconsciously) played a very controlling role in Sam's life, even though in his case it was (most of the time) to protect Sam. But he hardly ever (or make that never in this reality where the season 5 finale never happened) trusted Sam to make the right desicions on his own. The same goes for John. It weren't just the big forces.
Thank you for the awesome comment!

Date: 2011-08-05 11:17 pm (UTC)I read that little paragraph and my brain immediately shot into this giant tangent about how far it reached. This story is kind of really deep, as far as connecting experiences between Sam and Dean and drawing parallels and stuff like that (I feel like I could write a book on Castiel and how he could get from S5 to this story, and it would be awesome even if nobody cared about it =P) and this was just the first one that I remembered to write down when I had it instead of trying to remember after I finished the chapter =P

Date: 2011-08-09 11:41 am (UTC)Well, first I must say I'm STILL mad at Dean, but this chapter has certainly appeased a lot my anger, because it clearly shows how desperately he's trying to ignore the elephant in the room, trying not to think about his past and pretend he doesn't care. He even THOUGHT Sam's name!! Can you believe I squeeled when I read that part? Because nothing can EVER be right if Sam is not by his side!
Cas' attitude also appeased me a lot because he's obviously also mad at Dean!! He's giving him the silent treatment. I'm kind of surprised Dean didn't notice before because Castiel had been a lot more open about the past in the previous chapter, and it's been weeks. But I guess Dean knew deep inside but didn't want to ask or question. But if I were Cas I would speak to Dean of the past nonstop until he started facing his damn guilt!
I really hope Dean doesn't decide to go away on his own, by the way, I was seriously worried about that when they first took the horses and thought about running away. But now I feel like the countdown has started, and I'm really looking forward to get our Dean back (and to the very deserved meltdown!) so he can start thinking in how getting Sam back also.
I agree with Dean about the 'angel village' by the way, they totally give me the creeps!! I can only imagine how many innocent people they have killed in cold blood to defend their privileged lifestyle. In fact I'm sure they know the destruction was caused by angels, they are not really believers, just torturers and cowards. They are disgusting.
Of course, I would die to know more about Castiel's imprisonment and about what happened to Sam when they turned him in... damn I would like to read about *everything* that happened to Sam and Cas during their wandering years eventhough I'm not sure my heart would resist it. After all, we're getting just a few glimpses and it hurts terribly.
You know, it's amazing how you have managed to create such a rich and detailed world and different societies from what seemed only ruins and desert.
And well, Jena, I must say I DID see that one coming! it's such an interesting and mysterious character that we had to see more of her! I remembered you mentioning her comeback and as soon as the people spoke about the Lady I knew it was. I still don't have the faintest idea who she may be, though, only that she's not human (and she has teleportation powers, so probably an angel as I thought from the beginning). I'm hoping she will give us some answers next chapter?
By the way, you mentioned before that the last chapter of part one was close. Do you have the whole story already thought out? how many parts you think going to be? The story certainly looks like there are so much more to happen I'm really glad you aren't rushing it and really excited (and scared at the same time) this is going to become epic novel length!

Date: 2011-08-09 08:39 pm (UTC)I hope things turned out positively for you, too!
Yeah, Cas is pissed. I'd be pissed, too. This Dean has emerged from Season 5!Dean at whom I was pissed a lot. Maybe that's a factor in it...
The countdown has definitely started! I am, in fact, currently writing the final scene of the first part. For you, that's two chapters to go! (The next chapter will have plenty of Sam-hurting, by the way! It's actually the darkest yet.)
I don't dare completely judge the level of faith those villagers have. I don't know them well enough for that. (They came in kind of last second.) But I think you're at least partially right. I'd say, it's some parts selfishness, some parts indoctrination, and the rest is fear. And oh yes, they are definitely creepy!
Jena's return was a long time coming. I'm glad she's back - she's fun to write. Also, the next chapter will tell you what (and probably who) she is.
I have the story roughly thought out, meaning I know some important events in the future and I know how it will end. But a lot of stuff in between is still missing. That's why it's difficult to estimate how long this is going to get.
By the way, the next posted chapter will officially break the 100,000 words mark!
